Hi, I’m Melina

I am of Tahitian-Australian heritage and the second youngest of four children. Unlike many other Polynesian families, I grew up with only my immediate family members; my parents, my two brothers and sister. I didn't have grandparents, aunties, uncles or cousins in my everyday life and so stories became vital in keeping me connected to my family history, culture and legacy. When I was young, my Mum often talked about life back in Tahiti and at times it seemed aimlessly repetitive. But I now appreciate the gift of hearing her personal stories steeped in culture and understand the importance of knowing them. My Dad is a wonderful storyteller who has had a lively existence and many adventures living on the land and the sea.

My parents stories are of hard work, creating your own path, being deeply connected to the natural world, doing the best with what you have and taking care of your family. These are the stories that give me a sense of belonging and connection to myself, my family and the world around me.

My hope for Story Keepers is to help create the same for others through the preservation of their stories x
